Alyssa Thomas' fiancee DeWanna Bonner was close to leaving the Connecticut Sun in the 2024 WNBA free agency period. Bonner’s four-year, $899,480 contract signed in 2020 with the Phoenix Mercury had run out. She was an unrestricted free agent with no shortage of suitors.
The Sun and the two-time WNBA champ finally agreed to a new deal and Bonner re-signed on a one-year, $200,000 contract.
In an interview with WNBA insider Mark Schindler, Bonner discussed what she went through with Thomas in free agency:
“That was a different kind of roadblock in our relationship. It’s something that we really had to sit down and talk about. I think we did a great job of separating basketball and personal life.”
Thomas, who is in Paris competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics, shared her side of the story:
“It’s definitely hard. Every time she’s coming to me talking about, ‘I’m leaning towards this team or I’m leaning towards that team.’ And it’s like, you want to be from a relationship standpoint and be supportive. But from a basketball standpoint, it’s like… it’s not better than what we have, you know?”
Bonner and Thomas are no strangers to the usual issues regarding free agency. 2024 was the first time they had to deal with it as a couple.
DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas will be unrestricted free agents after this season
DeWanna Bonner’s one-year contract is co-terminus with Alyssa Thomas’ deal, making them unrestricted free agents after this season. The Connecticut Sun will have some tough decisions to make concerning their All-Star duo, who are set to get married after Thomas’ stint in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Sun might be willing to offer the 32-year-old Thomas a new contract but it remains to be seen what they do with the 36-year-old Bonner.
Connecticut holds an 18-6 record and is second only to the New York Liberty in the standings. The Sun have reached the semis thrice and the finals twice in the last five seasons. If Bonner and Thomas can’t carry them over the hump, the team might revamp the roster.
