The fan that Diamond DeShields highlighted referenced a medical condition. At the start of 2020, it was revealed after an MRI scan that the Chicago Sky guard had a small tumor in her spinal cord which if not removed could have paralyzed her. DeShields underwent surgery to remove the tumor at the University of Chicago.

However, the operation went beyond the expected time frame, resulting in Diamond DeShields undergoing a grueling rehabilitation process with an unsure future ahead. In 2021, she came back stronger and helped the Chicago Sky lift their first-ever WNBA championship.

The Sky have been cautious about using DeShields, keeping her game time minimal in games where she is not needed.

As per ESPN, DeShield's doctor has asked her to get annual MRIs to prevent the tumor from recurring.
