NaLyssa Smith is in China, but her girlfriend DiJonai Carrington, continues to keep an eye on her basketball journey. Smith plays for the Zhejiang Golden Bulls in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association (WBCA). Like many in the WNBA, the Indiana Fever power forward is playing overseas in the offseason.
The clip showcased highlights from Smith’s 23-point performance, including her first basket where she caught the ball in the low right block and powered her way to the middle for a jumper. Smith’s shot over her defender’s extended arms marked the Golden Bulls’ first two points of the game.
Carrington, who plays for the Connecticut Sun, reacted to the compilation of Smith's clips:
“Gettin activateddd 🩶🩶”
Carrington’s IG post wasn't surprising. Even when they played against each other in the WNBA, their mutual support was always there, unbothered by the criticism thrown at them for showing affection toward one another despite being competitors.
DiJonai Carrington and the Connecticut Sun sent home NaLyssa Smith’s team in the 2024 WNBA playoffs
The first-round matchup between the Connecticut Sun and the Indiana Fever was the most-watched series in the 2024 WNBA playoffs. Connecticut was the No. 3 seed with experienced veterans on the roster. The clash marked Indiana's first playoff appearance in eight years. Caitlin Clark, the Rookie of the Year and the league’s most popular player, steered the Fever to the postseason.
Besides Clark grabbing the limelight, fans were also excited to see Connecticut’s DiJonai Carrington battle her girlfriend NaLyssa Smith of the Fever. However, the highly intriguing Carrington-Smith matchup didn't deliver as expected.
While Carrington played a key role for the Sun in sweeping the Fever, Smith hardly saw action in the series.
Smith had trouble guarding Connecticut’s star player Alyssa Thomas in Game 1, forcing Fever coach Christie Sides to bench her for the next game. Smith couldn’t get herself going and finished the series scoreless with 2.0 rebounds, 0.5 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.
