The Indiana Fever appears to be taking proactive steps to turn their Caitlin Clark-led squad into contenders. While they have not made roster changes, the Fever updated their coaching staff. Their latest move is bringing in former Connecticut Sun coach Keith Porter.
Porter, a player development coach with the Sun for the past two seasons, will hold the same position with the Fever. On Wednesday, he announced on his Instagram that he was leaving the Sun. In his post, he thanked the Connecticut Sun front office, fans, coaches and players.
Sun forward Brionna Jones left a comment under Porter's post, expressing gratitude to the coach before inserting what looks like an inside joke.
"Thank you for everything @keithporter_8!" Jones wrote. You are definitely going to be missed but I am so grateful for the time we got to work together! Keep working on that post game tho."
Meanwhile, DeWanna Bonner and DiJonai Carrington shared their farewells for Porter as he left to join Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. However, instead of a comment, Bonner and Carrington said goodbye through their Instagram Stories.
Bonner reposted one of the images from Porter's post that featured them together. She also included a phrase summarizing how she felt about the coach.
"1 of 1," Bonner wrote.
Carrington's IG story also featured a clip reposted from Porter's original post. She also included a caption that was punctuated with what looks to be another inside joke.
"My guy," Carrington said. "Seatbelt never fastened tho."
At the time of writing, Keith Porter's Instagram post has been up for 23 hours. The announcement that he will join the Caitlin Clark-led Indiana Fever was made several hours after he bid goodbye to the Connecticut Sun.
Keith Porter re-joins Stephanie White's backroom staff in coaching Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever
Keith Porter isn't the only coach to join the Indiana Fever after departing from the Connecticut Sun. Stephanie White, the Sun coach for the past two seasons, was announced as the Fever's new head coach moving forward after Christie Sides was fired.
White and the Sun mutually agreed to part ways on Oct. 28. Under her leadership, Connecticut had a 27-13 record in 2023 and 28-12 last season. They made the Playoffs but were eliminated from championship contention in the semifinals both times.
Both White and Porter are now coaching a talented team of young players. In addition to Caitlin Clark, the Fever roster includes Aliyah Boston, the 2023 Rookie of the Year. Emerging talents like Lexie Hull, NaLyssa Smith, and Kristy Wallace are also on the roster.
