Over the past week, DiJonai Carrington has made headlines for her comments regarding the narratives being built around Caitlin Clark. The Connecticut Sun guard recently used an old LeBron James reference to send a message to new WNBA fans.
Carrington made a post on X (formerly Twitter) responding to critics about players talking about issues outside of basketball. She let the world know that she and other members of the WNBA have no plans to just "shut up and dribble."
"Unfortunately for y'all new fans, we do not just 'shut up and dribble' here. Ya picked the wrong league."
DiJonai Carrington pulled this quote from a remark that was made towards LeBron James back in 2018. After talking about politics in an interview, Fox News' Laura Ingraham made it clear she won't be taking advice from an athlete.
"It's always unwise to seek political advice from someone who gets $100 million a year to bounce a ball," Ingraham said. "Keep the political commentary to yourself or as someone once said, 'shut up and dribble'."
Along with being one of the NBA's top stars, LeBron James has never been shy to speak up about issues beyond his sport. With her latest social media post, Carrington let critics know that she is of the same mindset.
DiJonai Carrington speaks out on Caitlin Clark's comments
DiJonai Carrington likely made this post after the pushback she received for speaking out against Caitlin Clark. She made sure to let the world know she didn't agree with the 2024 No. 1 pick's stance on how her name is being used.
Since entering the WNBA, Clark has brought lots of added eyes and coverage to the sport. While it has its benefits, there have been some drawbacks. One being that some have tried to use her name to power racial narratives.
When asked about situations like this, Clark admitted it's not something she puts much thought into. Since it's something she cannot control, the Indiana Fever rookie doesn't put much energy into it.
After hearing Clark's comments on the matter, DiJonai Carrington came out with a response of her own. She doesn't agree with her stance on the matter and feels that staying quiet doesn't help anyone in the long run.
This ordeal unfolded about a week after Carrington and Clark squared off for the third time this season. Connecticut ended up coming away with a double-digit win, in large part due to the veteran guard's two-way play.
Along with some impressive defense on Clark, Carrington posted 22 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
