DiJonai Carrington shared a powerful message after a successful individual WNBA season, winning the 2024 Most Improved Player award. Carrington was one of the breakout players in the league, earning starter minutes and helping the Connecticut Sun reach the semifinals.
In a post on Instagram, Carrington shared a bunch of photos from her fourth year in the WNBA. She also wrote a strong message to her followers about not being denied, warning the rest of the league that she was just getting started.
"What if I told you I'm jus getting started … Thankful for a healthy season. Nothin' but God; delayed, never denied. #Year4 pt.1 #SeatbeltSeason," Carrington wrote.
DiJonai Carrington has steadily improved since being drafted 20th overall by the Connecticut Sun out of Baylor in 2021. She only started three times in the first three years of his career before being named a starter for the 2024 WNBA season by coach Stephanie White.
The 26-year-old guard rewarded White's confidence by averaging 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game. She was named the Most Improved Player ahead of Dearica Hamby of the LA Sparks, Bridget Carleton of the Minnesota Lynx and Chennedy Carter of the Chicago Sky.
Carrington also earned All-Defensive First Team honors, making some noise on that end due to her physicality. It also got her in trouble when she did a good job of defending Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever in the regular season, as well as the playoffs.
However, the ire became more apparent when she accidentally poked Clark's right eye in the first game of their first round series. She even got put on the spot by reporter Christine Brennan, but the WNBA went on the defense and called for Brennan's credentials to be withdrawn.
DiJonai Carrington is fifth player in Sun history to win Most Improved Player award
The Connecticut Sun have a knack for improving players based on their MIP credentials, with five following DiJonai Carrington's win. It broke the tie between the Sun and the New York Liberty for the most Most Improved Player award winners.
Carrington joins a list consisting of Wendy Palmer in 2004, Kelsey Bone in 2015, Jonquel Jones in 2017 and Brionna Jones in 2021. She received the MIP award and a cash prize amounting to $5,150.
The 26-year-old guard is set to enter free agency this offseason, but the Sun has the right to match any offers from other teams. However, Connecticut has other players without a contract – DeWanna Bonner, Alyssa Thomas and Brionna Jones.
