Brittney Griner is one of the most popular players in the WNBA but a polarizing one in the US as a whole. Since her return to the W after her extended detainment in Russia, Griner has sported a new look, cutting off her signature dreads during her imprisonment.
On Tuesday, Griner made a major announcement regarding her signature style, telling fans she is working to grow her hair back with a post to her Instagram story. In the post, a fan asked Griner, "You growing your hair back?"
"I sure am," Griner responded ecstatically. "Curl BG was cool but Dread head BG is better!"
Griner is set to enter her 12th WNBA season, coming off her ninth All-Star appearance in 2025. She played a crucial role for the Phoenix Mercury last season, averaging 17.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 blocks per game, shooting a career-high 57.9% from the field.
Brittney Griner is a future Hall-of-Famer, with two Defensive Player of the Year awards, two scoring titles, eight block titles, seven All-Defensive teams and six All-WNBA teams. She was also named to the W25 team as one of the 25 greatest players in WNBA history.
Brittney Griner set to make Unrivaled debut
Brittney Griner is one of 36 WNBA stars who will suit up in Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart's Unrivaled basketball league. The league will be made up of six teams featuring six players and a coach.
Griner will suit up for Phantom Basketball Club alongside Satou Sabally, Marina Mabrey, Natasha Cloud, Katie Lou Samuelson and Sabrina Ionescu, with Adam Harrington leading the way as the head coach. Unrivaled will follow a 3x3 full-court format on a smaller court than WNBA regulation.
Tip-off for the Unrivaled League is scheduled for January 2025 from Miami, Florida. Unrivaled reached a broadcasting deal with TNT for game coverage and will be available for streaming. The goal of the league is to give players alternative earning opportunities outside of the WNBA as opposed to players going overseas to join professional leagues during the offseason.
