Dwyane Wade’s wife, Gabrielle Union, was among the many fans captivated by the New York Liberty's exciting win in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals. The win was down to outstanding performances from Liberty stars Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart.
Both Stewart and Ionescu, who earned spots on the First and Second All-WNBA Teams respectively earlier this week, played crucial roles in helping New York secure an 80-77 victory over the Minnesota Lynx in Game 3. The win gives the team a 2-1 lead in the series and brings them one win away from their first championship in franchise history.
After trailing by 15 points, Stewart had an impressive second half, scoring half of the Liberty’s total points to close the gap. Ultimately, it was Ionescu who delivered the game-winning 3-pointer from the logo, sealing the victory.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Union gave a shoutout to Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart and shared her excitement for Game 4:
“SABRINA!!!!! STEWIE!!!!! Come onnnnnnnnn!!! Wow! #WNBAFinals I love this game. Game 4 bout to be 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥”
Ionescu finished with 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting, including three 3-pointers, one of which clinched the win. She also added six assists and five rebounds to her performance.
Stewart shined with a remarkable stat line of 30 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, scoring 22 points and grabbing seven rebounds in the second half alone to propel the Liberty's comeback.
Gabrielle Union's connection to the WNBA deepened when her husband, Wade, became a minority stakeholder in the Chicago Sky in 2023.
Liberty coach praises Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart’s Game 3 performances
Following the thrilling Game 3 victory, Liberty coach Sandy Brondello praised Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart for their crucial roles in the comeback, bringing the team closer to the first title in franchise history.
She commended Stewart’s strong second half and noted that giving Ionescu the opportunity for the game-winning shot was an easy decision.
"It was never in doubt. Stewie got us back in there, willed us in there... but Sabrina, she's just a shooter... Not everyone can make 'em, she can," Brondello said (per Myles Ehrlich).
During the postgame press conference, Ionescu revealed her feelings after making the game-winning shot.
"I feel like I was able to get a little separation in range and get a really good shot to go. Obviously, wanting to let the shot clock wind down and kind of got the space that I needed to be able to get my feet under me and feel comfortable taking that shot,” she said.
Meanwhile, Stewart admitted she was fueled by extra motivation during the game.
"I was motivated. I was mad. And I liked the matchups that I had,” she said (per Lucas Kaplan).
The Liberty, led by Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, will aim to secure their first-ever championship on Friday. If needed, a decisive Game 5 is scheduled for Oct. 20.
