Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky returned to action on Friday against the Phoenix Mercury. Despite playing at home, they couldn't keep up with the Mercury, who got a 20-point victory at Wintrust Arena. Mercury's Kahleah Copper (29 points) and Brittney Griner (23) were too much to bear for the Sky, whose best scorer was Dana Evans (14).
Reese finished the night with 11 points on 4-for-14 shooting, playing one of her poorest games of the season. One fan couldn't believe she was selected as Player of the Game of this duel.
More fans flooded X, formerly Twitter, with more negative things to say about Reese. One fan claimed that the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year race is over, although some insisted it's the opposite.
Others claimed Reese is getting protected and there's a narrative to make her more relevant than she should be.
"Wait ... this is for the whole game not just Chicago's team player? It can't be ... they can't gaslight THAT obviously," one fan tweeted.
"There is absolutely an agenda….. if y’all can’t see it then idk," another fan tweeted.
"She's more protected and coddled by the media than LeBron. Needed 33 minutes and 22 combined FG/FT just to get to 11 and half her rebounds on her own misses; plus got absolutely blown out, but hey," Another fan tweeted.
Two fans mocked Reese's double-double run and her rating in NBA 2K25.
"Generational double double," one fan tweeted.
Angel Reese voiced her frustration after losing to the Mercury
The Chicago Sky had a hard time trying to keep up with the Phoenix Mercury. The Arizonians asserted dominance in the first quarter, winning it 30-12. They closed the first half with a 20-16 win in the second quarter. Although the Sky tried to make a comeback, it was too late for them.
Angel Reese surpassed Sylvia Fowles for the most offensive rebounds in a season in Sky's history with her sixth offensive rebound of the night. This is great news for Reese, but she wasn't interested in any personal record during the post-game interview.
“I don’t want to hear about no record, man," Reese said.
The Sky still has playoff hopes, but they must move on from this loss and keep playing hard.
