George Karl downplaying Caitlin Clark in favor of JuJu Watkins caused an uproar among WNBA fans. The former NBA coach made a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying that he thought JuJu Watkins was even better than 2024 Rookie of the Year.
The 2013 NBA Coach of the Year also wrote in his post that Watkins could even play in the NBA.
"As good as Caitlin Clark is, I’m thinking Juju Watkins may even be better. She looks to have the size, athleticism and talent to even compete in the NBA at some level!"
Some of the fans rediculed Karl and wrote that she might get a bench spot in the G League. Some even wrote that even Bronny James could easily beat her.
"Compete in nba 😂 you are out of your mind. Yeah maybe bench spot in G league," a fan wrote.
"What? The NBA? Even Bronny could smoke her," another fan wrote.
Some of the fans brought Notre Dame's Hannah Hidalgo into the conversation, ranking her higher than Watkins among the best in college basketball.
"She might not even be the best player on college basketball right now. Hannah Hidalgo is nice if you haven’t checked her out," the fan wrote.
"I’m sorry we’re done with juju. Let’s talk about Hannah," another fan wrote.
There were fans who got personal with the former coach, as some even clowned him for his own failure in the NBA.
"Can’t believe a former NBA coach would say this absolute clownery. 🤣," the fan wrote.
"Tweets like this help me understand why you never won a championship," a fan commented.
"Alright time for the nursing home for you old man," another fan wrote.
Former NBA coach George Karl compares Caitlin Clark's impact on WNBA to Julius Irving's on NBA
It would simply be impossible to deny the impact that Caitlin Clark has had on the WNBA. From the increasing fanbase to unprecedented spike in the ticket sales, Clark's impact is as real as science.
Former NBA coach George Karl was so impressed by the impact of Caitlin Clark on the WNBA that he compared her to the NBA legend Julius Irving. Replying to a tweet by Tim Reynolds of the AP that showed the increased attendance of teams when playing against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, Karl had this to say.
"Caitlin Clark may be the Julius Erving of the WNBA. He had that impact on the ABA then NBA!" Karl wrote in his post.
Julius Irving is one of the greatest players in basketball history. Irving was one of the first players to show off flashy moves on the NBA court that quickly made him a fan favorite. Dr. J was the Michael Jordan of the NBA before Michael Jordan arrived.
