The fierce competition between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese sparked numerous discussions on social media and one of the unfortunate ones was racism. It was alleged that Clark's boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, had liked racist comments on X (formerly Twitter).
Replying to a post that showed Charita Martin hugging Clark, former WNBA player Val Whiting revisited the allegations levied on McCaffery. However, she defended Clark by saying that while such allegations against McCaffery might be a known phenomenon, she had never heard that the Indiana Fever rookie was uncomfortable around her black teammates.
"Well her boyfriend is known to like racist tweets so it made people wonder. But that’s a whole nother subject . I never heard the narrative that she was uncomfortable around black people," Whiting wrote on X.
Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark address ROTY competition
Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark are two of the biggest names in the WNBA and they sell out tickets anytime they face each other. The two are also the forerunning candidates for the Rookie Of The Year Award and the competition between them could easily seem like against each other.
After the game between Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky on August 30, Caitlin Clark was asked about the ROTY award competition between her and Reese. The Fever rookie said that she isn’t focused on their individual award but rather on winning games.
"I'm sure [Angel] would give you the same exact answer—I'm sure she has given you the same exact answer,” Clark told reporters in the post-game press conference. (per Yahoo Sports) "So for us, everybody can write that but our focus is on winning basketball games. It's simple as that, like, it's winning basketball games. And that was the same story for us when we were in college.”
“Like, if you're playing basketball, to get one individual awards, no matter what level you're at, you're doing it wrong. And that's not fun. And that's not being good teammate.”
As Caitlin Clark said, Reese did have the exact answer to the question. She said that the media had made it a big deal but she doesn’t care about the award either.
“We don't either care about Rookie of the Year,” Reese told reporters. “I think you guys have made it a big thing. We haven't.”
“We both want to win. We've been wanting to win, and that's what we've done in our collegiate career…So we're just trying to do whatever it takes to win. That's what's important right now.”
Both Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky are in the playoff spot right now. Caitlin Clark's Fever is 6th on the standings after 32 of the 40 games this season, while Angel Reese's Sky is 8th after 31 games.
