Seattle Storm rookie Nika Muhl was happy to learn that one of her former teammates would play basketball again today. Aubrey Griffin hadn't touched the court for 381 days and the wait is finally over for the forward. The UConn Huskies women's basketball team's Instagram page shared the news on social media on Sunday.
"for the first time in 381 days, Aubrey Griffin plays basketball today," they captioned the post.
Needless to say, this was major news for many people who played with or watched Griffin play. Nika Muhl shared the good news on her Instagram stories, writing a six-word message to express her excitement.
"BEEN WAITING FOR THISSSSS [Aubrey Griffin] is baaaack," Muhl wrote.
Despite not being a team member since 2024, Nika Muhl has remained close with the squad and is often seen reacting to news involving the Huskies. They go against Seton Hall on Sunday, hoping to welcome Griffin back with a big win.
What happened to Aubrey Griffin?
The senior forward has been out of action since Jan. 3, 2024, when she suffered a torn ACL against Creighton.
That day, the Huskies had a field day against their opponents, taking a 94-50 commanding win behind Paige Bueckers' 24 points. Griffin played 12 minutes before exiting the duel, finishing the game with six points on 1-from-2 from the field and 4-from-4 from the free-throw line.
Nika Muhl played 29 minutes but only scored two points after making just one of five field goal attempts.
Griffin started 30 games for UConn in the 2022-23 season, averaging 11.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per outing. If she returns to her best level, the Huskies will be even more dangerous this season.
Nika Muhl shares hilarious text exchange with Paige Bueckers
Hours before pumping up Aubrey Griffin's return to the court, Nika Muhl shared a screenshot of her conversation with Paige Bueckers, laughing at how their conversations are after both players picked up knee injuries.
The image showed Bueckers asking the WNBA player about her knee and Nika doing the same with her former teammate.
"This how the convos be going nowadays @paigebueckers 🤣🤣," Muhl captioned the post.
Besides Griffin's long-awaited return to the court, Paige Bueckers will be under the spotlight today, as she's only six points away from becoming the 12th player to score 2,000 points in UConn history. It's fair to say Muhl will be cheering for both players.
