Angel Reese spent her first year in the WNBA under coach Teresa Weatherspoon’s leadership. The Chicago Sky were in prime position to make the playoffs when the season went into a break because of the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, a slow start to the second half and a wrist injury to Reese all but ended their hopes of making the playoffs.
Weatherspoon was let go as the Sky’s coach on Thursday after less than a year in that position. She was announced as the coach in October 2023 after spending three years with the New Orleans Pelicans as an assistant coach.
Even though Chicago drafted double-double machine Angel Reese, the team’s record regressed from the 2023 season. The Sky went just 13-27 this season in comparison to the past season’s 18-22 record.
After news broke of Weatherspoon’s firing, Reese took to social media to express her sorrow. However, fans took this as an opportunity to add to her misery by trolling her in the comments section of a X post shared by @espnW.
There was a common theme as fans made fun of Reese’s rebounding prowess. The rookie finished the season with 27 double-doubles and set the record for the longest streak at 15.
“Make some layups and she’s still your coach,” another fan said.
“Raise your hand if you feel that T-spoon made some questionable decisions to help AR keep her double/double streak alive, while sacrificing other players,” a fan added.
“She got fired because she focused on stat padding for you at the expense of winning games,” a fan said.
Here are a few more reactions from fans:
“Oops I accidentally hit the delete button my bad,” a fan said.
“She thinks she’s Rosa Parks or something,” another added.
"What was the point of firing her? What they do is make things worse when she, with all the injury problems she had, did everything possible to keep the team in the fight for the Playoffs. She also got along very well and had the trust of the rookies," a fan added
“Angel Reese got her fired,” a fan added.
What did Angel Reese post about Teresa Weatherspoon’s firing?
Angel Reese came up with a heartfelt post reflecting on her time with Weatherspoon on the Chicago Sky. Reese wrote on X:
“I’m heartbroken. I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me. Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black women in sports when nobody believes in you. You had a tough job.
"All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed.”
Angel Reese also claimed she joined the Sky because of Weatherspoon:
“I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short amount of time that will last forever. I’ll never question God why he brings people in my life and takes them away from me in the capacity that I need them but i’ve always believed everyone is in your life for a reason and a season.
“You were the best reason & season. You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough. I love you Tspoon.”
The Chicago Sky haven't made an announcement yet on who will replace Teresa Weatherspoon.
