Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky are on a seven-game losing streak, having won just once since the Olympic break. Fans have placed the blame on Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon, accusing her of prioritizing the rookie's individual stats over team victories.
Reese has averaged 12.7 points, 16.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists since the WNBA resumed in mid-August, but her field goal percentage remained low at 33.9%. Despite her efforts, the Sky have only won one game, against the bottom-ranked LA Sparks.
Fans voiced their frustrations on X (formerly Twitter), claiming the Sky's losing streak is a result of Weatherspoon focusing on boosting Angel Reese's personal records rather than aiming for wins.
“Sky with a 7-game losing streak, and will finish with a worse record than last season. Teresa Weatherspoon really did her team a disservice prioritizing individual achievements over wins. In the end, it wound up costing them both,” a fan, KinnickNorth23, said.
Last season, the Sky finished with an 18-22 record. Despite acquiring top talents like Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso in the 2024 draft, this season has been tougher. They have matched last season's loss total with only 11 wins, with seven games remaining.
Meanwhile, Angel Reese has continued to draw attention, making waves in her rookie year by being named a WNBA All-Star and setting a league record for rebounds and consecutive double-doubles.
“Keep chasing the double double and don't play as a team. If I were Reese, I'd become Rodman and leave the scoring for others,” said @Lushie92
“[W]hen one person tries to pad her own stats instead of playing team ball, this is what happens,” added @Jenner1234567.
One user, @msshawnt, attributed the team's struggles to the Marina Mabrey trade. The Sky traded Mabrey, along with a 2025 second-round pick, to the Connecticut Sun in exchange for Moriah Jefferson, Rachel Banham, a 2025 first-round pick and 2026 draft considerations.
“Losing Marby hurt bad along with injuries,” the user said. “They should have grabbed (Odyssey) Sims because the frontcourt is struggling imo. I don’t feel the coach prioritized individually, that is presumptuous.”
Here's what other WNBA fans said about the Sky’s situation:
“It's a disgrace and shameful when you consider Witherspoon's background,” said @idrinkcoffeeblk.
“Kamilla is the better player than Angel. Kamilla should be the franchise player. Coach Weatherspoon loves Angel too much,” said @hennyworld.
“Can’t see how she keeps her job when Cardoso was the 3rd overall pick and is used as an afterthought barely getting shots. Reese the worst offensive player on the team gets 12 attempts a game on 38%. Cardoso gets 7 shots on 52% How does that make sense?,” added @JShampansky.
What’s ahead for Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky?
Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky are clinging to the eighth seed with seven games left, sharing an 11-22 record with the Atlanta Dream. The Washington Mystics are 10-23, while the Dallas Wings are close behind at 9-24. Only two games separate the Sky from the Wings.
Despite the challenges, the Sky have the easiest remaining schedule, according to Tankathon. Key matchups ahead are against the Sparks, Wings, Mystics and the Dream, all crucial for playoff seeding, alongside three games against playoff-bound teams: the Sun, Lynx and Mercury.
