Hoops fans were vexed after the referees missed a conspicuous foul against Caitlin Clark on Wednesday. The incident occurred during the Fever's 87-81 loss against the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville. Indiana rookie Clark drove the ball full court and tried to make a layup after weaving her way through the defense.
Marina Mabrey, who previously played with Clark's arch-rival Angel Reese for the Chicago Sky earlier this season, leaped to block the Fever star’s shot attempt. While Mabrey successfully got a hand on the ball, her follow-through struck Clark's face, delivering what appeared to be a harsh blow.
Even the commentator was surprised at the referees missing the foul and was heard saying, "that's a foul."
Fans slammed the officials for missing a clear-cut foul, with one X user asserting that it would be a flagrant foul in the NBA.
"Absolutely tremendous defense by Burton, but that was not a basketball play at all by Mabrey. That’s a flagrant foul in the nba lol."
Another fan was shocked at Clark not getting foul calls from the referees despite being fouled hard on the play.
"Caitlin Clark is the only player in the league, who wont get a foul call even after getting hit like this. Absolutely ridiculous. Nothing left to say!!!"
"There is a lot left to say. The trend of "let's pick on Caitlin Clark" is a disturbing one. There is a number of fouls against her by others that get ignored. She's young. She's talented. The jealous haters need to move on," commented another X user.
One of the fans slammed the WNBA for taking no action against the officials.
"That is a fact. The @wnba just decided the Fever won't get past this round. If they were real and honest, those officials would have been fired after Sunday."
A couple of fans had some harsh words for the officials while reacting to their no-foul call decision on Clark.
"Refs Didn’t see anything! Caitlin Clark needs to know, no blood, No foul! Inexcusable! Here’s a closer look," said another X user.
"Obvious foul. Told you that bald mother fu*ker wasn’t going to call when Clark gets fouled," wrote another fan.
Caitlin Clark's rookie season ends
Caitlin Clark's rookie season came to an end as the Indiana Fever crashed out of the playoffs after losing the first-round series 2-0. After struggling to shoot the ball in Game 1 and scoring just 11 points, the 22-year-old bounced back and put on a terrific display in Game 2.
Clark recorded a stat line of 25 points, six rebounds and nine assists. The former Iowa standout shot 10-of-23, including 3-of-12 from the three-point range.
She also had one steal and one block shot while she turned the ball over three times in 40 minutes.
