Caitlin Clark and Sabrina Ionescu have made a decision about the upcoming WNBA 3-point Shooting Contest, declining the invitations for the event. Both players will compete in the All-Star Game, but won't engage in any other on-court activity before the matchup.
Multiple fans hoped to see this duo, or at least one of them, taking part in the contest. Ionescu and Clark are two of the best shooters in the WNBA and a contest with them would have drawn a lot of attention.
After learning about the news, plenty of fans were unhappy about their decisions and took to social media to criticize the guards.
One fan said they wouldn't have done the same if the invitation came from the NBA.
"But they won’t decline NBA invittation for a 2 on 2 3pt shoot out with Steph and Klay. 👀," this fan said.
"They will be getting ready for their 2 v 2 vs Steph and Draymond and the NBA All Star Game three point contest 🔥🔥🔥," another one said.
Other fans said this was a disappointment from both stars, as they would have gotten a lot of attention.
"Wow...what a disservice to the fans. Actually a let down," one fan said.
"Damn. Such a missed opp. Those two head-to-head would be massive for them and the sport," another fan wrote.
Somebody said this was the first loss Caitlin Clark has received in her career.
WNBA announces 3-point Shooting Contest participants withou Caitlin Clark, Sabrina Ionescu
After shooting the lights out last season, which earned her the opportunity to go against Steph Curry in this year's NBA All-Star Game, Sabrina Ionescu won't defend her title after declining the invitation. The league announced the participants for this edition, noting that a new champion will be crowned.
Caitlin Clark won't be there, either, leaving Jonquel Jones, Stefanie Dolson, Marina Mabrey, Kayla McBride and Allisha Gray as the contestants for this event.
Speaking on the upcoming All-Star Game, Caitlin Clark wasn't entertaining questions about the event last night, admitting that her focus was on the duel against the Dallas Wings on Wednesday.
"My focus is on this game tonight, then we'll turn to All-Star after that, but, we need to beat Dallas," Clark said when asked about her potential 3-point contest appearance.
After breaking another WNBA record with 19 assists in a single game, Clark is living up to the expectations this season, but fans will have to wait to see her compete in the 3-point shooting contest.
