The Chicago Sky fired head coach Teresa Weatherspoon less than a year after being hired to steer the team. It was a move that garnered varied reactions from WNBA fans on social media.

Weatherspoon's sacking came on the heels of what turned out to be a disappointing season for the team, even with rookie rebounding machine Angel Reese in its fold. The Sky concluded the season with a 13-27 record, finishing in 10th place and missing the playoffs for the first time in six years.

Fans immediately picked up the development and made their thoughts known on X, formerly Twitter.

One fan moved to take up the cudgels for T-Spoon, suggesting that if the Sky fired a coach like her, others too should follow, in particular, Indiana Fever's Christie Sides, saying:

"If Sky fire T-Spoon, Fever better fire Sides!"
"'Announce Sides,' another with a similar take said."

Some comments, meanwhile, expressed surprise with the firing.

"'Damn did not expect that,' a user laid down."
"'I know she didn't make the best decisions, but it's her first year. Damn!" another expressed in disbelief.
"'Almost got a whole new roster in the playoffs in a first year rebuild and still got fired,' a fan asserted.

Then there were some who came up with possible scenarios after the firing of Teressa Weatherspoon.

"Wow Angel got her coach fired. Funny how Swoopes trying to be the coach of the Sky," a user suggested, making reference to Reese and WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes.
"I see a lot of trade requests coming from players out of Chicago now...." another speculated.

One fan was not surprised with the move, writing:

"Well deserved."

As of writing this, the Sky has not disclosed the reason for the firing of Teresa Weatherspoon. But the team did struggle to find consistency winning under her, made worse by their whimper of a finish, where they lost 12 of their last 14 games.

Prior to being signed by Chicago, Teresa Weatherspoon was an assistant coach with the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA.

Angel Reese 'heartbroken' over firing of head coach Teresa Weatherspoon

Angel Reese spent only one season with Teresa Weatherspoon with the Chicago Sky but it was enough to create a bond with her. She was 'heartbroken' when the news of the coach's firing came out.

The All-Star forward took to X to share what Weatherspoon meant to her, not only as a coach but also as a black woman trying to make a name in women's sports.

"I'm heartbroken. I'm literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me. Many don't even know what it's like to be a black a woman in sports when nobody believes in you.
"You had a tough job ... I came to Chicago because of YOU... You didn't deserved this but I can't thank you enough. I love you Tspoon."

Check out her post below:

Under Teresa Weatherspoon, Reese had an eventful rookie season, averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds (league-high) for the Sky.
