Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell shared an emotional tribute to her grandmother on Friday, celebrating her birthday. Mitchell shared a video of herself surprising her grandma in a salon via video call, along with a heartfelt message.
"happy birthday to my FAVORITE lady, one of my angels. 2024 was tough on you, but you're still standing my BABY! i love you and can't WAIT to see you," she wrote.
Mitchell also shared a screenshot of a FaceTime call with her grandmother. Additionally, she posted a throwback photo of the two.
"you a soldier, you a gangsta, you the real definition of a woman. I'm so GRATEFUL to see you in live action, have another birthday.
"i won't flood you, but KNOW i love you with everything in me, granny. thank you for showing me the way. i hope the day is good to you," Kelsey added.
Mitchell ended the 2024 season on a high but her future with the Indiana Fever remains uncertain.
Rebecca Lobo said on the "Elle Duncan Show" that she might not be able to leave the Fever even if she wants to.
“I would say probably not but also I have to look into this further. I don’t think Kelsey Mitchell has ever been called, and I don’t think any other players on the roster are called. So even if Kelsey wants to leave in free agency, I don’t know that she can,” Lobo said on The Elle Duncan Show. (9:33)
Mitchell averaged 19.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.7 steals per game last season.
Kelsey Mitchell shares emotional tribute to late father
In Nov., Kelsey Mitchell penned an emotional tribute to her father, who died in March. This came via an article published by The Players' Tribune, where she opened up about the mental struggles she faced adjusting to life without her father.
“This was one of the hardest seasons I’ve ever been through, in basketball and in life. Because for the first time, I had to learn how to do it without my dad,” she writes, adding that her father was her ‘OG’ and best friend,” she said.
She thanked the Fever organization for their role in her growth as a pro basketball player.
