Breanna Stewart is one of the best players in the WNBA. However, her biggest win may be off the court. She married Marta Xargay Casdemont in July 2021 in an intimate ceremony, and they welcomed their first child together, Ruby Mae, the following month.
Their romance started in the locker room, but things weren't as simple at first. In an interview with People magazine, Stewart revealed that Casademont wasn't very welcoming when they played together for Russia's Dynamo Kursk in 2018.
"She didn't talk to me," Stewart said in August 2021. "She was in Russia way before me; I came later. I was trying to figure out the team. But then, as it went on, I (started) building the relationship with all of my teammates.
"And then having more of an interest in Marta, but still, you know, nervous to do anything."
Casademont then started to notice Stewart, as she found herself captivated by her personality.
"You can see from outside," Casademont said "You can see how she was to people, the way she was acting and how her personality was. One day, it clicked. I don't know!"
Once they hit it off, Stewart took things up a notch by surprising her. While she was rehabbing a ruptured Achilles, she flew to Serbia to cheer on Casademont in a EuroBasket playoff game.
"I remember, I was posting a thing on Instagram, and all of the sudden, I saw someone standing in front of me, and it was her," Casademont said. "For 10 minutes, I was looking at her, like, 'Is this real?'"
Breanna Stewart is on top of the world right now
Breanna Stewart is one of the most accomplished female basketball players of all time, and she's fresh off winning her third WNBA championship. In just her second season with the New York Liberty, she helped the team win the title with averages of 20.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.
She was named an All-Star and All-WNBA first-team member for the sixth time in her eight-year career. Stewart also earned her third All-Defensive first-team selection.
The Liberty are the odds-on favorites to repeat as champions next season, and much of that has to do with Stewart's two-way dominance.
