The New York Liberty avenged their WNBA Finals loss to the Las Vegas Aces in 2023 by knocking them out of this year's playoffs. The Liberty, who boasted the best regular-season record, did not disappoint their fans and dispatched the Aces in four games. One of the Liberty's social media posts trolling the Aces went viral online.
The Liberty's social media team shared a post that poked fun at the defending champions using cultural symbolism. The post featured an image of iconic New York Timberland boots placed on top of the Aces' logo at the Michelob Ultra Arena after Game 4.
Interestingly, former Aces star Dearica Hamby was among those who liked the post.
In August, Hamby filed a federal lawsuit against the Aces and the WNBA for alleged mistreatment. She alleged that the Aces had mistreated her and traded her to the LA Sparks in January 2023 after she disclosed her pregnancy.
After an initial investigation by the league, the WNBA suspended Aces coach Becky Hammon for two games. However, the WNBA star wasn't happy with how the grievance was settled and filed the lawsuit in federal court. The WNBA and the Aces have asked the court to dismiss Hamby's claim.
Las Vegas Aces coach responds to New York Liberty trash talk after the series win
The New York Liberty demonstrated their dominance in the WNBA by beating the Aces in the semifinals. Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon addressed the trash-talking between the two teams dating back to last year's finals after her team got eliminated.
Hammon told the media after Game 4 that she was fine with the banter, saying her team had done the same when they claimed the title against New York last year.
"We talked our crap, they heard it and they get to talk their crap. It's part of the game, it's not personal," said Hammon. "I can talk crap all I want, but at the end of the day, I have mad respect."
Hammon also praised the Liberty for their success this season.
"They've been the best team all year. They earned it all year. ... This team was put together to take us out and they did."
In the best-of-five semifinals, New York took out the Aces in four games. Last season, Las Vegas Aces defeated New York in four games in the WNBA Finals.
The Liberty now await the winner of the other semifinal series between the Minnesota Lynx and the Connecticut Sun.
