The second-round matchup between the Minnesota Lynx and the Connecticut Sun has been a physical battle. Both teams are motivated to advance to the Finals for a chance to be this year's 2024 championships but it appears the tension has resulted in an altercation off the court.
According to a report by the Athletic's' Shams Charania and Ben Pickman, a confrontation occurred between the Sun's players and Minnesota head coach Cheryl Reeve after Game 1.
The report states that Reeve "ran up" toward the Sun players after the game. Reeve seemingly did not appreciate how the Connecticut players celebrated their hard-earned victory, prompting her to confront them. Arena security also reportedly got involved in the de-escalation of the situation.
Minnesota played hosts in the first game of the series against the Sun and were stunned in front of their fans. The game came down to the final shot but the Sun survived with a three-point win (73-70) after Napheesa Collier failed to connect on a game-tying shot.
The Minnesota Lynx and the Sun have had close battles all season long
The Minnesota Lynx and the Connecticut Sun have been one of the more entertaining matchups during the 2024 regular season. The first time these two squads faced off, the game went to overtime, ending in a one-point victory for Connecticut.
Despite not heading into overtime, their next two battles also had narrow margins of victory. Their second game was decided by only five points (78-73) which also saw the Sun take a 2-0 series advantage.
Minnesota finally took the win over the Sun in their final season matchup on Sept. 17. After another hard-fought battle, Minnesota won by just two points to avoid being swept in their season series.
Their close battles have carried over into the semifinals of the 2024 WNBA playoffs. Both teams swept their first-round opponents and are now locked in a heated battle to decide who will advance to the Finals.
After the Sun took the first game with a three-point win, the Lynx bounced back to win two straight. In the second game, Minnesota displayed a total team effort to win by seven points (77-70).
They took the winning momentum of the second game of the series and used it to propel themselves to a nine-point victory in the third game. This has by far been the largest margin of victory in the clashes that took place between these two teams this year.
Should the Lynx win their next game, they will advance to the Finals where they will take on the winner of the Las Vegas Aces vs. New York Liberty series.
