Gabby Williams has weighed in on the Geno Auriemma-Arike Ogunbowale episode which had the Huskies coach cracking a hilarious joke. Williams left her opinion in the comments section of a fan's post that Ogunbowale had reposted on X.
The fan had posted screen grabs of Ogunbowale and Auriemma's tweets. The Seattle Storm guard then reposted the tweet with crying and laughing emojis in the caption. When Williams came across the post, she left a sarcastic comment.
"And this was the moment they made coach delete his Twitter😭"
The original back-and-forth between Ogunbowale and Auriemma happened in 2014. The Storm guard listed her top five colleges in alphabetical order, mentioning Louisville, Notre Dame, Ohio State, UCLA and Wisconsin.
Auriemma then cracked a joke.
"Stay tuned for my list of the top 5 players I saw the past 7 days that I have zero interest in recruiting.... #whatajoke," Auriemma posted.
Gabby Williams was a part of the Huskies squad when Auriemma made that post. Ogunbowale ultimately went to Notre Dame and was selected as the fifth pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft.
Gabby Williams responds to Cathy Engelbert's claim that WNBA players can make $700,000
Gabby Williams took a jab at the WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert during a Seattle Storm press conference after Engelbert claimed WNBA players could earn $700,000 annually.
"Our commissioner talked about us being able to, you know, make $700,000. That's actually not true at all. There's not one player who makes that," Williams said during the press conference.
Williams focussed her speech on the incentive of playing in the WNBA as an international player. She highlighted that she was promised marketing agreements, but the league has fallen short.
She also said that the financial incentive in the WNBA is not enough for international players to stay and want to play in the league.
"It is still not enough for us international players to wanna stay here," Williams said. "That's the choice of the players if I make a choice to make more money then whatever and then teams are mad that I don't come back but that's how it is. Yes, it is just, the WNBA if you want us to be here, you know, you have to pay us more. It's business, it's how it works."
Gabby Williams was a crucial figure in the Storm's run last season. She averaged 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game to help her team make the playoffs.
