Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse publicly praised newly appointed Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh. In a press conference on Sunday, Nurse took the time to share Marsh's coaching journey and the steps he took to get to his situation today.
Nurse reminisced about the time he and Marsh worked together as part of the G League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers coaching staff. He then praised Tyler's efficiency as a trainer.
Because of his hard work, he eventually became an assistant coach on the Toronto Raptors and the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces.
"[Tyler Marsh] worked for me in Rio Grande [Valley Vipers]," Nurse revealed. "He was a 24 hour a day player development guy. ... So obviously, took him to Toronto [Raptors]. He's a guy who comes from a good basketball family. ... He was always an incredible student of the game. ... You guys know Tyler got more rings than me."
With Marsh on his staff, Nurse led the Raptors to the 2019 NBA championship. Marsh then went on to win two more rings with the Aces in 2022 and 2023.
Tyler Marsh thinks Chicago Sky is perfect for him
Tyler Marsh, former assistant coach and player development coach for the Las Vegas Aces, is now the head coach for the Chicago Sky. Marsh replaces Teresa Weatherspoon after coaching for only one season.
Chicago was one of the worst teams in the WNBA last season, notching a 13-27 record. This resulted in a 10th-place finish, which wasn't enough to get them to the 2024 playoffs.
Given Marsh's capabilities as a coach and his decorated résumé with two WNBA titles, Chicago hopes he can bring the same success to the Sky. This being his first stint as a head coach, Tyler seems excited to take over the team.
"A big part of my philosophy is that trust factor. Once you can get a player to buy into you and once you buy into the individual, the basketball stuff comes easy," Marsh said per CBS News Chicago. "So we want to invest in people first."
He feels like the team is a perfect fit for him and is ready to coach players like Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso.
"With [Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso], it's just been the will to compete and the will to win," Marsh said. "They want to do things the right way. Hopefully, my leadership is able to help extend that to them. We want them to improve and to get better, but also want to highlight their strengths and what they do well."
With a new and highly motivated head coach in Tyler Marsh joining the Chicago Sky, the organization and fans will be looking forward to what the team can do in the upcoming season.
