Hailey Van Lith and Team USA made their Paris Olympics debut in the 3x3 women's basketball on Tuesday. The TCU player led the team against Germany, but couldn't get the win.
Van Lith landed in Paris as one of the biggest names, even knowing that she had to share touches with WNBA Most Improved Player of the Year award (MIPOY) candidate Dearica Hamby and Atlanta Dream star Rhyne Howard.
They put on a good fight but ultimately lost to the European team 17-13. Hailey Van Lith was very active for Team USA, leading the team with six points. She also had three rebounds and two turnovers. The former LSU player made four of her seven 1-point attempts and one of two 2-point attempts.
She had a player value of 7.5, the highest on her team, but not better than Elisa Mevius and Sonja Greinacher of Germany, who recorded 7.9 and 8.6, respectively.
Dearica Hamby contributed four points and a game-high seven rebounds for Team USA while Cierra Burdick added two points and Rhyne Howard only had one.
Team USA lost its first game in this tournament but will have the chance to bounce back against Azerbaijan on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. EDT. The group stage has just started and Team USA will have more opportunities to bounce back and improve its record.
Hailey Van Lith speaks on expectations to learn from professional players at the Olympics
Earlier this week, Hailey Van Lith addressed how she's learning and making progress in her game in the company of professional players. She admitted that this was a great opportunity to keep growing while acknowledging that she's doing something well if she's getting called to represent her country in an international tournament.
“This is a great opportunity for me to be around pros, to learn from pros,” Van Lith said (h/t USA Today). “But at the end of the day, my views on myself are never determined by people outside of me. College has been what it’s been for me but at the end of the day, the Olympics and playing for Team USA is the ultimate experience — and if they think I’m worthy to play for the national team, then that says a lot.”
Hailey Van Lith is set to play with TCU next season after playing alongside Angel Reese for LSU last campaign. She's getting notable experience with Team USA that will only benefit her for the rest of her career.
