Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie visited to watch Angel Reese and the Rose Basketball Club of the Unrivaled Tournament during a training session. The moment was captured in a video posted by the Rose BC's official handle on Friday.
Former WNBA star Lisa Leslie was sighted in the stands as Angel Reese and her Rose BC teammates were participating in shooting drills.
The three-time WNBA MVP will make a special appearance as part of official broadcast partner TNT's studio show. TNT and Unrivaled announced this on Tuesday as she will join three-time WNBA Champion Candace Parker and two-time Champion Reene Montgomery.
Leslie will also join Brendan Glasheen and Sarah Kustok in providing play-by-play commentary for the tournament's games.
Tip-off is slated for Friday, Jan. 17, with the co-founders, Breanna Stewart and the Mist Basketball Club, facing Napheesa Collier and the Lunar Owls Basketball Club. Next will be Angel Reese and the Mist BC taking on Arike Ogunbowale and the Vinyl Basketball Club.
Lisa Leslie opens up on her early days in the WNBA
Lisa Leslie is one of the WNBA greats, but that would not have happened, as in 1996, she had almost given up on her basketball career. She appeared on a December 10, 2024, edition of the Legends of Sports podcast, where she talked about when she was called to join the WNBA, her first training camp with the LA Sparks and her mental readiness for the new women's league.
"When I was called about the WNBA, they said it would be in the summer, like a summer league," Leslie said. "I really thought it was gonna be like reversible jerseys, we'd probably play at Long Beach State or a small community college, a gym. So I was like 'Yeah I could do that for a couple of months."
"My first time preparing for the WNBA was literally training camp. And then I'm like, 'I'm not really ready to play basketball.' We're playing at The Forum. I had no idea that Dr. Buss would have the LA Sparks... We had the same locker room as the Lakers. We got thrust into this professional league that I was not really prepared for. I was ok but I was running on fumes," Leslie added.
Before making her debut in the WNBA, she had led Team USA to gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Her first season in the WNBA was, however, successful, despite her feeling of "running on fumes" as she ended the season with 15.9 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.
She ended her career as a two-time WNBA champion (2001 and 2002) with the LA Sparks. Aside from her TV commitments, she is the head coach for the Triplets in the BIG3 pro basketball league.
