Fans are upset after Team USA's loss to Spain in the 3x3 women's basketball tournament semifinals in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Hailey Van Lith and company fell short of the gold medal game after a tough overtime defeat against the Spaniards.
HVL put the United States ahead by a point with about a minute left before Sandra Ygueravide tied the game at 14. Rhyne Howard hit a go-ahead shot with 13 seconds left but Ygueravide made another shot before the buzzer to force overtime.
Ygueravide opened the scoring in overtime, wherein the game would be over if a team got ahead by two points. The 39-year-old put the game away by hitting the game-winning free throw to give Spain the 18-16 to send the Americans to the bronze medal game.
Fans were unhappy with how Team USA finished the 3x3 women's basketball tournament. They started it with two losses before bouncing back to win five in a row before crashing out against Spain. Hailey Van Lith got the brunt of the blame despite finishing with eight points and five rebounds in the semifinals.
"HVL should never be on an Olympic team again," one fan wrote.
"The fall off of Hailey Van Lith needs to be studied," a fan replied.
"Hailey Van Lith always the face of bad news," another fan responded.
It's been a rough tournament for Team USA in terms of 3x3 basketball. The women's team failed to reach the gold medal game and the men's team finished in sixth place, which led fans to wonder what went wrong.
"Why are we so bad at 3x3?" a fan asked.
"We gotta stop sending scrubs," one fan suggested.
"Both USA 3x3 teams got cooked," another fan commented.
Team USA takes home bronze after beating Canada
Despite not reaching the gold medal game, Team USA still had a podium finish after beating Canada in the bronze medal game. Hailey Van Lith led the way for the United States in a 16-13 win over their neighbors up north to take home the bronze.
It was still a good finish for the Americans although they were able to win the gold at the Tokyo Olympics. The difference was Stefanie Dolson, Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young were WNBA players when they competed in the 3x3 women's basketball tournament in Tokyo.
On the other hand, Van Lith is still a collegiate player for TCU after transferring from LSU a few months ago. Dearica Hamby and Rhyne Howard are WNBA players, while Cierra Burdick currently plays overseas for Valencia. Burdick last played in the WNBA back in 2021 with the Seattle Storm.
