"I don’t care about that": Angel Reese shares powerful response to Rookie of the Year praise from coach Weatherspoon

Angel Reese shares powerful response to Rookie of the Year praise from coach Weatherspoon.

Angel Reese is enjoying an excellent start to her professional basketball career. The Chicago Sky rookie has been putting up impressive numbers consistently and showing off her talent in year one in the WNBA.

The No.7 overall pick in the 2024 class is one of the leading candidates to win the prestigious Rookie of the Year award. Reese is battling with her rival and Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark for the honor.

Ahead of the Sky's marquee matchup against the Fever on Sunday, Reese was asked about Chicago coach Teresa Weatherspoon touting her as the leading candidate for ROTY.

Reese delivered a powerful response, affirming that personal accolades don't matter to her and she is focused on winning the ultimate prize.

"Coming into the league I just wanted to be the best Angel I could be. I wanted to come in and help bring championships to Chicago and that's always still going to be my goal. I don’t care about my individual accolades," Reese said.
"I just try to focus on the team, and we’ve been losing. So, it doesn’t matter to me anything about me being Rookie of the Year. I don’t care about that," the Sky rookie added.

Angel Reese is averaging 12.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.8 steals in her rookie season. The former LSU superstar leads all rookies in rebounds (133), steals (34) and double-doubles (7).

Weatherspoon underlined that if Reese continues her stellar play throughout the season, the No.7 draft pick will be the top candidate for the prestigious award.

"I don't just say it just because I'm coaching her. But you have to sustain this type of play. If you sustain this type of play, not only will I speak about it, but the world will," Sky coach told reporters.

Angel Reese drops sixth consecutive double-double

Angel Reese continued to deliver for Chicago during Sunday's blockbuster showdown against Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever. The Sky rookie ended up with a double-double for the sixth consecutive game.

As has been the case throughout the season, though, Chicago failed to capitalize on Reese's performance. The Sky were defeated 91-83 by the Fever at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse Arena in Indiana.

Reese scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Five of her 13 boards came on the offensive end. Reese also had five assists and two steals on the night.
