A'ja Wilson made history on Sunday, joining Cynthia Cooper as the only players to be named the WNBA MVP unanimously. The Las Vegas Aces superstar kept her team afloat when things weren't going their way, and although they weren't as dominant as last year, Wilson was on another level.
No. 22 talked about what it meant to her to win her third MVP award:
"It feels good. I'm blessed to be able to say I got my third one, but it wasn't easy, but that's what I love the most about it, 'cause I continue to try to set the bar for myself and check things off my list. It's a blessing to just be in that number, to have my name sketched in history forever."
More than that, A'ja Wilson spoke about how her teammates have served as inspiration for her this season.
"When it comes to talking to and about my teammates, I get emotional because I see things that not a lot of people see," Wilson said. "I see the everyday lives of them, first and foremost. It's a lot. This season takes a toll on you.
"I get emotional because I know the stories that they may have; I know things that we may not see, that everyone's fighting through something, everyone's healing from something. And to still come out here and be themselves, it just brings so much emotion to me because in any game, any given day they can be like, 'I don't wanna do this anymore.'
"But they continue to show up and pour into me, and if I can pour to them in any type of way, that's why I get so emotional about, because they mean that much to me."
A'ja Wilson's 2024 season revisited
2024 was, as many now know, a season to remember for A'ja Wilson. The center played 38 games, averaging 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.8 steals and 2.6 blocks per game, shooting 51.8% from the field and 84.4% from the free-throw line. She posted 23 double-doubles and broke the record for the most rebounds in a single season, putting the cherry on the top to a memorable run.
The Aces will start their playoff journey on Sunday night against the Seattle Storm in what seems to be one of the most entertaining series of the 2024 postseason.
A'ja Wilson hopes to continue her good moment and lead her team to a three-peat for the first time since the Houston Comets did it in the early years of the WNBA.
