Caitlin Clark recently went viral after doing a personal play-by-play commentary in an MLB baseball game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers. Clark explained why she's a Phillies fan and defended herself by saying she's not a bandwagoner.
In a post-practice interview with reporters on Saturday, Clark was asked about her baseball fandom. She clarified that she's not a bandwagon fan, although she doesn't follow baseball much. Her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, is a huge Phillies fan, so she supported the team.
Clark added that she still loves other MLB teams like the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals. She even pointed out she had no choice but to watch Kansas City teams since it's the closest to Iowa. She added that she liked the Chiefs before they dominated the NFL.
"My boyfriend grew up a really big Phillies fan, so I kinda had to like the Phillies. I do like them, I love Bryce Harper. I still like the Cubs, I like the Yankees. I'm not like a diehard any baseball team. My dad was a big Royals fan," Clark said.
She added:
"Kansas City was like a professional sports team to us. I liked the Chiefs before the Chiefs were really good too, so I'm not a bandwagoner either. I like the Phillies, so I'll cheer for them this postseason."
Caitlin Clark grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and the city didn't have a professional sports team. The closest sports team was in Kansas City, which is less than three hours away. Kansas City has teams in the MLB, NFL and MLS. As for basketball, Clark loved the Minnesota Lynx since it was the closest WNBA franchise in Des Moines.
Caitlin Clark's boyfriend Connor McCaffery lands coaching gig at Butler
Caitlin Clark's boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, went to Indiana right before her when the Pacers hired him as a team assistant after playing for the University of Iowa. After just a year with the Pacers, McCaffery landed a sweet gig within the city at Butler University.
The 26-year-old coach will be replacing former NBA player Greg Oden, who vacated the position to focus on his business interests. Despite not having any coaching experience, McCaffery has the pedigree to succeed since he's the son of Fran McCaffery.
Fran has been the longtime head coach of Iowa's men's basketball program. Connor's younger brothers Patrick and Jack are also set to join him at Butler as players. Patrick transferred to the Bulldogs in the final year of his college eligibility, while Jack is a senior in high school.
