The Indiana Fever picked Caitlin Clark first overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft inside the packed Brooklyn Academy of Music. Over 700 miles away, the Fever home court had thousands of fans watching and eagerly waiting for Clark’s name to be called. Connor McCaffery, her boyfriend, was the first person she hugged backstage when her pro basketball dreams came true.
On Thursday, “National Boyfriend Day” in the US, Clark went on Instagram to share a throwback photo of that moment. The WNBA Rookie of the Year captioned her post:
“@connor_m30 I’m lucky”
Connor McCaffery shared the same post Caitlin Clark had on her Instagram. Before featuring that story, he had one that highlighted Clark’s ROTY campaign. He didn’t say anything but simply tagged his girlfriend.
Indiana Pacers assistant coach McCaffery often watches Fever home games to cheer Clark. Sometimes, McCaffery goes with Pacers superstar Tyrese Haliburton.
The former Iowa Hawkeyes basketball stars have been dating since April 2023 but largely kept their relationship private. In April this year, they lit up social media by sharing photos on Instagram to celebrate their first year as a couple.
Caitlin Clark thanks her supporters after “Year One”
Caitlin Clark was a near-unanimous choice as the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year. She got 66 of 67 votes to get the recognition over rival Angel Reese. Once the league made the award official, she went on Instagram to thank her supporters.
“Year one ✅ — thank you to the many people who have supported me as I’ve been able to live my childhood dream. I’m filled with gratitude as I reflect on this past year of my life," she wrote.
"See you all in year two 🖤💫”
For Clark, she's likely to use the offseason to get some rest after taking the Iowa Hawkeyes to a national championship game and then followed it up with taking Fever to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
