Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon announced major changes for the 2025 WNBA season. After winning back-to-back championships, they were considered a strong candidate to get a third consecutive title, but their season came to an end this Sunday.
After the New York Liberty beat them 76-62 to advance to the 2024 WNBA Finals, Hammon spoke with reporters, hinting at roster overhaul.
"We have to get better, we have to really take a sharp look at ourselves, look ourselves in the mirror, see our shortcomings and then, you know, you got to make the moves necessary, whatever that means.
"It's not going to be the same group probably next year, it just won't. And I'm sad about that because I really liked that group. They were a pain in my a** but I was a pain in their a** too, and I like that group. I love that group," Hammon said.
The Las Vegas Aces finished first in the entire league in 2022 and 2023 but only managed to finish fourth this season. They struggled at times, making A'ja Wilson carry them to the No. 4 seed in the standings. Then again, not even the three-time MVP could get them past the Liberty and now they enter the offseason with several questions to answer.
Becky Hammon called out distracted players after going 0-2 against the Liberty
Before saying that we won't see the same Aces group competing next year, Becky Hammon shared her thoughts on the complications of trying to win three consecutive championships. She threw shade at some of her players, saying they were distracted 'being freaking celebrities' on Tuesday when the Liberty took a 2-0 advantage.
"The whole league has been pissed off for the last 8 months, and my players are in commercials, and this, and that, and being freaking celebrities. You get distracted," said Hammon.
"There's a reason why it hasn't been done since Kobe and Shaq in any sports league. Unless the Chiefs do it agian," the Aces coach added while speaking about the challenge on completing a three-peat.
The Aces entered the season as favorites, but the league got stronger and they didn't look as hungry as before. A'ja Wilson only could lead them to some point, but the Big Three of Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones were too much to bear for Becky Hammon's squad.
