Before their tragic deaths in 2020, Sabrina Ionescu had a close relationship with Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, after meeting them while she played at Oregon. Their deaths had a devastating impact on her, and she delivered a moving message during their memorial ceremony.
"I carry Kobe and Gigi with me every day and honor their legacies through my dedication to the game," Ionescu said during the service. "I wake up every day grateful for the platform I've been given and I strive to lead by example and serve as a role model for young people and especially girls to pursue sports — a platform Kobe and Gigi were passionate about."
In her first Olympic appearance, Sabrina Ionescu averaged 5.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists off the bench. She played more of a complementary role for Team USA and had her best Olympic outing in the opening matchup against Japan, where she recorded 11 points and five assists in a blowout win.
