Former WNBA All-Star Erica Wheeler chose to take her talents abroad this offseason and is competing in the Women's Basketball Super League in Turkey. The league is considered one of the most competitive outside the United States, and the Indiana Fever guard is starting to feeling the burn.
On Saturday, Wheeler's team, Nesibe Aydin, was taking on Bursa Ant Spor and the 33-year-old seemed to reach her limits after a series of hard fouls. Wheeler received her first technical foul in Turkey, and didn't hold back when discussing the incident on social media.
"Woahhhhh got my first tech today! Them refs was letting these Turkish girls play football ! I wasn’t having it today! I spazzed tf out!" Wheeler posted on her Threads account.
Wheeler finished the night with 14 points, shooting 5 of 14 from the field in her team's 75-71 win. However, nothing came easy for the Miami native, who also took a dig at the officials on her X account in what seemed to be a sarcastic comment:
"Yaaaa I got my first tech today! The refs were amazing."
Wheeler was a member of the Indiana Fever's successful 2024 WNBA season. Led by rookie sensation Caitlin Clark, the team finished with a 20-20 record and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Over 39 games, Wheeler averaged 3.6 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists.
Wheeler is a free agent for the 2025 season, but could re-sign with the Fever on Feb. 1 when players can sign contract with teams.
Erica Wheeler names her most memorable moment of the Fever's 2024 season
The 2024 season was littered with exciting moments for the Indiana Fever coaches, players and fans. While speaking to the press in September, Erica Wheeler recalled her most memorable moment of the season, which involved WNBA Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark:
"I think for me my memorable moment is when I threw the drop pass back to C and the arena just went crazy. In that moment I was just like, yo, we're about to get this every night. This is crazy"
Wheeler was referencing the Fever's game against the Connecticut Sun on May 20. The two guards connected for one of the most thrilling plays of the season, sending the home crowd into a frenzy after Clark drilled a fourth-quarter 3-pointer to give the Fever a two-point lead.
