The start of the 2024 Paris Olympics inches closer each day, Dallas Wings forward Satou Sabally is preparing more than just her skill set for the international multi-sport event. Shared on her Instagram stories, Sabally previewed her afro look while donning a Deutschland basketball shirt. Once the Olympics begin, Sabally will be representing Team Germany.
The Wings star was the second pick in the 2020 draft and is already playing in her fourth WNBA season. Her excellent 2023 season was cut short due to a shoulder injury that she continues to recover from after receiving surgery. With no games played in 2024, the forward is expected to play with her country's Olympic Women's Basketball squad.
In the 38 games she played last season, Sabally put up 18.6 points (43.5% shooting, including 36.1% from beyond the arc), 8.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists.
Satou Sabally talks pride in representing Team Germany at the 2024 Paris Olympics
In anticipation of Germany's women's Olympic team making its debut in this year's Paris Olympics, Satou Sabally highlighted how the journey in securing their spot hinged on incredible dedication and work. However, she pointed out the stark difference in how Team Germany did it compared to how USA Basketball has done it over the years, as per her interview with Paul George on his "Podcast P."
"It's not like in America where you have 12 All-Stars on the team," Sabally said. "No, we really fought for this so hard. Not to take anything away from other countries but I think we're really just at such a special time in Germany history with sports and women's sports that this means so much more to me than you can imagine."
Compared to Team USA, Sabally is aware of the difference in talent that Germany will be sending to Paris. However, that has made the journey all the more satisfying from her perspective.
Unlike in past years, several countries continue to improve and catch up to the dominance long established by the USA when it comes to the sport of basketball.
Sabally will be playing alongside her younger sister, the New York Liberty's Nyara Sabally, as the siblings look to showcase their capabilities on the international floor.
