DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas, the power couple of the WNBA, have played a crucial part in Connecticut Sun’s success this season. Playing in the forward position, the veteran players share both their family and the team. The WNBA couple has one more thing to share now.
The Sun’s forward couple graced the July issue of the SLAM magazine. Bonner and Thomas posed for the magazine in Connecticut Sun and Team USA jerseys. They also appeared beside each other in their casual attire.
DeWanna Bonner, who is 36 years old, might be a veteran but has been one of the highlights of Sun’s success this season. With two WNBA titles, Bonner has had an illustrious career so far, winning three Sixth Player Of The Years in three consecutive seasons, from 2009 to 2011.
Alyssa Thomas has established herself as one of the most versatile players in the league. She has been as dominant on the board as she has been in running the Sun’s offense. Thomas led the league in steals in 2020 and in 2023, she led the league in rebounding.
Thomas was drafted by the Sun in 2014 and since then she has been with the team. Bonner joined Thomas on Sun in 2020, after the trade from Phoenix Mercury, and soon after the teammates also became partners. It was during the 2023 All-Star game that Thomas proposed to Bonner in Las Vegas.
DeWanna Bonner talks about playing alongside her partner Alyssa Thomas
Both Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner are partners on and off the court. While it may seem that they will have natural and the best chemistry in the league, it is not true. The couple still misread each other’s angles sometimes, just like any other teammates.
They were asked by SLAM about what it was like to play with each other on the court. Bonner said that playing basketball with her partner had both good and bat parts about it.
“It’s like a gift and a curse. You’re playing with somebody that’s the best in the world and she’s also your partner, so you get to bounce ideas off of each other, you talk basketball. But also, it’s competitive; we go at it on the court as well,” Bonner said. “But I still want to bust her up on that court.”
Thomas and Bonner will go against each other during WNBA All-Star Game on July 20. Thomas, who is part of Team USA, will go against Bonner, who will play for the WNBA All-Star Team.
This season, Bonner is averaging 17.1 points on 43.3% shooting from the field and 31.7% shooting from the rim. She is also averaging 6.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game for the Sun.
Alyssa Thomas, on the other hand, is averaging 11.2 points on 50.3% shooting from the field. She is also averaging 9.2 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Both Bonner and Thomas have played 23 games this season.
