After an abysmal start to the year, the Indiana Fever have steadied the ship and will look to continue their playoff push when the WNBA season restarts on Thursday. After a monthlong summer break, the Fever will need to hit the ground running if they hope to be one of the last eight teams standing.
With over half the regular season complete, the battle for a coveted spot in the postseason is heating up. All 12 teams remain in the playoff picture, and we can expect to see some intense matchups in the coming weeks as teams jostle for position and look to secure a postseason birth.
Led by Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston, the Fever are looking to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons. Over the team's 25-year history, they have won one championship, defeating the Minnesota Lynx 3-1 in 2012.
Clark will be the player to watch out for once the season restarts. The rookie guard leads the roster in points per game (17.1), assists (8.2) and steals (1.5).
Indiana Fever 2024 WNBA playoffs scenario: Updated standings
The Indiana Fever sit seventh overall in the standings with an 11-15 record, which keeps them in a playoff position. They have a slightly better win percentage than the eighth-place Chicago Sky and hold a three-game lead over the ninth-place Atlanta Dream.
As previously mentioned, the Fever had a disastrous start to the season, losing their first five games before securing their first victory of the year against the Los Angeles Sparks. That was followed by another three-game losing streak, and the situation seemed grim after a 1-8 start.
Led by some stellar performances from rookie sensation Clark, Indiana are 10-7 since June 1 and will be looking to continue that form over the last 14 games of the regular season.
Indiana Fever 2024 WNBA playoffs scenario: Remaining schedule
The Fever will have to hit the ground running with upcoming games against the Phoenix Mercury (13-12) and Seattle Storm (17-8). Both teams sit above them in the standings, and Indiana will be desperate to make up some ground on their rivals as they look to get some breathing room.
On Aug. 24, Indiana will face another tricky matchup against the Minnesota Lynx, who have had a strong 17-8 start to the year.
Perhaps the most important games of the season will come at the end of August when the Fever face the Atlanta Dream and Chicago Sky over four days. Those two rivals sit directly below Indiana in the standings, and those games should be critical in deciding the finals playoff spots. The Fever will meet the Dream once more on Sept. 8.
Indiana closes out their season with what should be a winnable game against the Washington Mystics (6-19) on Sept. 19.
