The Indiana Fever played their first do-or-die knockout game of the 2024 WNBA season on Wednesday against the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 of their first-round series.
The Sun won a close contest 87-81 to advance to the semifinals. They will face either the Minnesota Lynx or Phoenix Mercury in the next round.
Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark's rookie season came to a disappointing end. Despite her impressive 25-point night, the Fever couldn't get over the hump and force a Game 3 in Indiana, which would have helped their chances of making it past the first round.

Indiana Fever vs. Connecticut Sun Game 2 recap
Unlike Sunday's Game 1, which the Fever lost 93-69, Indiana came out firing in Game 2. The Fever's pesky defense got stops early in the game. That allowed them to set out in transition. The Fever began the contest on a 10-4 run, with Caitlin Clark registering three points, four rebounds, and three assists in the first five minutes.
However, the Fever couldn't sustain that intensity. The Sun stormed back into the contest in the last five minutes, getting their defensive schemes together. This led to an 11-0 run as the Sun took the first quarter 17-14.
The second quarter continued in the same vein. The Fever's offense went stagnant because of the Sun's swarming defense. Connecticut went up 26-16 to record its largest lead of the half and entered the break leading by seven (41-34).
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever came out swinging after the halftime break, going on a quick 7-0 run to tie the game for the first time since being in the lead to start the contest. The teams exchanged blows for most of the quarter until the Sun got a five-point separation with 3:20 left.
They extended the advantage to nine points, entering the fourth quarter with a 61-52 lead.
The Sun managed to keep the Fever at bay for the first six minutes. However, a series of timely baskets from Caitlin Clark and Temi Fagbenle got the Fever right back into it, giving them a 71-70 lead with 4:00 minutes left.
The teams exchanged leads for the next couple of minutes, but a pivotal stretch saw the Sun gain the upper hand. DeWanna Bonner hit a tough 3 to put the Sun up 78-77 with 1:50 left. On the following possession, Caitlin Clark ran the clock out and had the ball poked away by Marina Mabrey with two seconds left.
The Fever botched the sideline out-of-bounds play. They got another chance to take the lead, but Kelsey Mitchell made an ill-advised decision to pass up a mid-range shot and throw it in the Fever's court. Mabrey hit the 3 on the other end to put the Sun up 81-77 with 46 seconds left.
DiJonai Carrington and DeWanna Bonner made their end-of-game free throws, extending the lead to 85-77 with 30 seconds left. The Fever cut it to six but only had 12 seconds left.
The final score was 87-81 in favor of the Connecticut Sun, who qualified for the semifinals, while the Indiana Fever saw their season end after a valiant effort.
