The incident between Connecticut Sun star DeWanna Bonner and USA Today reporter Christine Brennan has been taking attention away from the WNBA playoffs. There have been reports of Brennan filing a complaint against Bonner, and fans have been wondering what is actually happening.

To address the questions, ESPN's Sarah Spain released a lengthy thread on X (formerly Twitter) about information that she obtained from different sources.

Her thread consisted of five posts, detailing everything she knows. The biggest claim was that Brennan did not file a complaint against Bonner.

"After their exchange Christine called league PR to report a confrontation with DeWanna," Spain said. "Christine says--and the league confirmed--that she didn't officially file a complaint, so "reported the incident" is more accurate language."

Spain released a tweet on Oct. 6 that alleged Christine Brennan filed a complaint with the league against DeWanna Bonner, citing sources. Brennan responded to that by saying she did not lodge a complaint against Bonner.

What happened between DeWanna Bonner and Christine Brennan

The issue between DeWanna Bonner and Christine Brennan stems from Sept. 22 when the Sun faced the Indiana Fever in Game 1 of the playoffs' opening round. In that game, DiJonai Carrington inadvertently poked Caitlin Clark in the eye while going for the ball.

Two days after the game, during a Sun practice session, Brennan asked Carrington if her hit on Clark was intentional and if she laughed about it afterward with teammate Marina Mabrey. Carrington denied both claims.

Carrington's teammate DeWanna Bonner reportedly took issue with how Brennan questioned her teammate, so she spoke to the journalist about it. However, neither side was allegedly willing to hear what the other had to say.

This interaction between the two caught the attention of the WNBPA, which led to the players' union calling for Brennan's credentials. In fact, the WNBPA released a statement on Sept. 27 on social media aimed at Brennan.

USA Today issued its own statement in defense of Brennan on the same day. In the statement, it said that Brennan was doing her job as a journalist by asking questions to find the truth.
