A'ja Wilson will lead Team USA on Tuesday in an exhibition game against Germany in London. The Americans only have two tune-up matches ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. They lost 117-109 to a team composed of WNBA All-Stars on Saturday before facing the Germans.
Wilson had a solid game in the loss to the WNBA selection. She looked unstoppable at times and finished with 22 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block. Wilson is expected to have more of the same impact when the USA tangles with Germany.
The Germans aren’t traditional powerhouses in women’s basketball. Die Mannschaft will be making its first trip to the Olympics in women’s basketball. But, the team is led by three WNBA players who know very well how Americans play.
A'ja Wilson will anchor Team USA on both ends of the court
Team USA is easily the deepest and most skilled team that will compete in women’s basketball in the Olympics. They are led by two-time MVPs A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. Diana Taurasi, who is aiming for her sixth gold medal in the quadrennial games, is the experienced leader of the star-studded team.
On the court, Cheryl Reeve will lean heavily on the three, particularly Wilson, who can consistently hurt opponents on both ends of the floor. Besides being a dominant scorer, the Las Vegas Aces forward/center is also a two-time reigning WNBA Defensive Player of the Year winner. After winning the gold medal in Japan, Wilson is hungry for another one in Paris.
A'ja Wilson resumes her partnership with rival Breanna Stewart for Team The biggest WNBA rivalry over the past few years has been between A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. They have been battling each other for the top individual honors in pro basketball. Stewart ended Wilson’s reign as regular season MVP but the Aces star won the 2023 WNBA Finals MVP over “Stewie.”
Wilson and Stewart will set aside that rivalry as they prepare for the Olympics. They were instrumental in Team USA’s gold-medal romp in Japan and will be looking to do the same in Paris.
In the loss to Team WNBA, the partnership between A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart was on full display. They combined for 53 points, 16 rebounds, six assists, four blocks and two steals. The Germans and every opponent in Paris will find out starting Tuesday why they make Team USA the heavy favorites to win another gold medal.
