WNBA analyst outlines how Caitlin Clark's red hot Indiana Fever still have a shot at making top 4

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever’s domination since the season restarted shouldn’t be news to anyone. They are on a four-game win streak, the longest in the WNBA. They have also won eight of their past 10 games, a feat matched only by the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx. Indiana has gone 6-1 since the restart and sits sixth overall.

While the Fever are almost guaranteed a playoff spot, they don’t have home-court advantage yet, as only the top four teams get that privilege. During an appearance on SportsCenter on Sunday, former WNBA player and current analyst Rebecca Lobo was asked if Indiana could “sneak into that top four.” Robo said:

“It's crazy that with the way the Indiana Fever started their season, that it's even mathematically possible that they could get into that top four. It's possible, not necessarily probable, but it is possible.”

While Robo had her doubts, she did outline how it could very well happen:

“One of the reasons is their upcoming schedule. After their game today, they have six straight at home. Included in those six straight are two games against Vegas, which they most likely would have to win, both of them, to end up in that top four. But the other reason is the way their backcourt is playing.

“They have really gelled with one another. We'll start with Caitlin Clark coming off her best game of her career so far, 31 points, 12 assists, near 60% from the field in that game. And her backcourt mate Kelsey Mitchell has been incredible, especially in these last six. ... This team is gelling.”

The Las Vegas Aces currently hold the fourth spot with a 20-12 record, while the Seattle Storm are fifth at 19-13. The Indiana Fever trail the Aces and Storm by 3.5 and 2.5 games, respectively.

Can Caitlin Clark and Indiana Fever realistically reach top 4?

While it is still mathematically possible, it would take a Herculean effort from Caitlin Clark and the Fever (17-16) to make it a reality. While Las Vegas started the second half of the season slow, it has since improved and is on a two-game win streak.

If the Indiana Fever are to have any chance of reaching the top four, they need to beat the Aces in back-to-back games on Sept. 11 and 13. The good news for Indiana is that both games are at home, so the squad will have the crowd behind it.
