Las Vegas Aces All-Star A'ja Wilson commemorated Juneteenth National Independence Day on Wednesday by wearing a special t-shirt ahead of their home game against the Seattle Storm.

A national holiday, Juneteenth, celebrates every June 19 the ending of slavery in the United States. The name mixes the words "June" and "nineteenth" as it was on June 19, 1865, that the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was made in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.

A'ja Wilson observed the day by wearing a black shirt with the words "It's a beautiful day to be black" printed on the front, which she showcased as she made her way to their dugout at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.

The two-time WNBA defending champions, the Aces, were looking to bounce back against Seattle after losing to the New York Liberty on Saturday.

Las Vegas was in good form early against the Storm, holding a 29-16 lead at the end of the opening quarter, with Jackie Young and A'ja Wilson leading the way with 14 and seven points, respectively.

A'ja Wilson expresses concern over Aces' struggles

The defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces have been grappling for consistency early in their campaign and resident star A'ja Wilson has expressed concerns over her latest setbacks.

Including their loss to the New York Liberty on Saturday, the Aces have dropped four of their last five matches for a middling 6-6 record, fourth in the Western Conference.

It is something that does not sit well for the two-time league MVP, who wants to be better and help her team play at a level befitting as champions.

A'ja Wilson shared following their loss to Liberty:

"I'm gonna go out there and I'm gonna try to be the best -- I get y'all saying best player in the world, that's great, it looks great, but I wanna be the best person. I wanna be the best teammate. Because that's how I get the best out of my team."

She added:

"When you're talking about greatness, it starts with consistency. Everybody can be good here and there, but who can be great every single game, every possession. And that's what I'm striving for. It starts with me and it's gonna always be with me, because I have 11 other women in that locker room that I need to pull greatness out of."
