The Japan women's basketball team shocked the world in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when they took home the silver medal despite having an undersized roster. Akatsuki Japan will look to have the same success but without the homecourt advantage this time around at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Japan had plenty of preparation with seven exhibition games, winning the first five before losing the final two. They defeated powerhouse China twice in early June then beat New Zealand three consecutive times.
However, Akatsuki Japan ran into some tough matchups against France and Belgium. They tried to keep it close versus Les Bleus but were down big by the third quarter, while Belgium was in control from the get-go.
Japan women's basketball Olympic roster
Rui Machida, Saki Hayashi and the Mawuli sisters are back to help Japan finish with another medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Machida led the last tournament in assists at 10.8 per game. Evelyn and Stephanie Mawuli have been the stars during the exhibition games.
Despite being undersized, Japan will use their quickness and offensive execution to put a lot of pressure on their bigger opponents.
