Former Las Vegas Aces guard Kate Martin, who is preparing to make her debut with the Golden State Valkyries, the latest WNBA franchise, in the 2025 season, has been diligently continuing her offseason training as she approaches her second year as a professional player.

Her coach, Maxwell Schmarzo, recorded footage from a recent offseason workout with Martin, focusing on enhancing her speed and strength. Schmarzo, known as "Strong By Science" on social media, has over 445,000 followers on Instagram and humorously claims to be the "most famous 32-year-old dad in Iowa."

“Most famous 32 year old dad in Iowa + @katemartin = getting better at basketball day by day,” he captioned his post.

Martin shared the workout clip on her Instagram Stories, adding the caption:

“Let’s. Go.”

Their training sessions included techniques for utilizing body contact to position herself for scoring opportunities, creating space and leveraging her movements. They also focused on hip-torso disassociation, sprints and shooting drills.

In a previous training video, Martin showcased her athleticism by successfully dunking a basketball.

Jumping ability has often been criticized among WNBA players, yet the 6-foot guard proved she could reach the rim. Schmarzo also posted images from an earlier workout session with Martin.

In a follow-up Instagram update, Schmarzo detailed the training plan he crafted to boost Martin's explosiveness.

“In the weight room we focused on good amount on being explosive and working on some single leg posterior chain work,” he said.
“Carrying that work over to the court we spent more than half our time working on defense and then the rest on specific acceleration drills — from finishing at the rim to creating space off the bounce.”

Kate Martin is set to return to professional basketball next month in the Unrivaled basketball league, where she will join Laces BC alongside notable players like Courtney Williams, Kayla McBride, Alyssa Thomas and Stefanie Dolson.

Kate Martin headed to Golden State Valkyries

Drafted by the Las Vegas Aces in 2024, Kate Martin had limited playing time during her rookie season, averaging only 2.6 points over 11.5 minutes per game.

The WNBA recently conducted an expansion draft for the Golden State Valkyries, allowing them to select one player's contract or negotiating rights from each of the existing 12 teams.

The Aces opted not to protect Martin during this draft process, resulting in her selection by the Valkyries.

“I'm really excited,” Martin said during the draft program. “This league is all about opportunity, you just need one shot… I'm very thankful for the Aces and everything I got to learn there, but I'm really excited for this new beginning and to build something from the ground up here with the Valkyries.”

The complete roster of players selected by the Valkyries includes:

  • Atlanta Dream: Iliana Rupert (C)
  • Chicago Sky: María Conde (F)
  • Connecticut Sun: Veronica Burton (G)
  • Dallas Wings: Carla Leite (G)
  • Indiana Fever: Temi Fagbenle (C)
