Indiana Fever fans were given a scare after star Kelsey Mitchell appeared to get hurt in the first quarter of their matchup against the Washington Mystics on Thursday. This was disheartening to see considering that it was the final game of the regular season.
Mitchell being healthy moving forward is important for the Fever, who clinched the sixth seed in the upcoming WNBA playoffs. In that regard, Mitchell provided a positive update.
Based on what Mitchell said to the media, she should be ready for her team's showdown against the Connecticut Sun.
"I feel great," Mitchell said. "Hopefully you guys saw me, I didn't think I looked bad. I feel great, I think for us it was just about precautions, prevention, so to speak. I feel good."
Kelsey Mitchell and the rest of the Fever starters were rested by head coach Christie Sides in the second half against the Washington Mystics. On account of her getting hurt, Mitchell played the least amount of minutes, logging only a total of five minutes of action.
Having the starters rest in this contest gave the second unit some valuable minutes in preparation for the postseason. Without the starters, the Fever fell short by just one point, 92-91.
Kelsey Mitchell was instrumental in leading the Fever to their only regular season win against the Sun
Based on their regular season record, the Indiana Fever are facing a tough uphill battle against the Connecticut Sun in the playoffs. In the four games that these two teams played against each other, the Fever only managed one victory.
The first clash between the Fever and the Sun also happened to be the season opener for both teams (May 14). Indiana ended up losing by a 21-point landslide, 92-71, against Connecticut. Kelsey Mitchell came off the bench in that game and logged only eight points.
Their next matchup took place just days later on May 20, and while the score was much closer this time, the Fever still ended up losing by four, 88-84. Mitchell started this time and finished with 17 points.
The Fever and the Sun would not face each other again for about a month but when they did, Indiana's earlier struggles from the first two games were still evident. Connecticut would rout the Fever once again on the way to a 17-point win. Mitchell was once again held to only single-digit scoring, logging only nine points.
Finally, the Fever figured out the answer to beating the Sun when they faced off for the final time in the regular season on August 28. Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever in scoring in that game with 23 points, helping them secure a four-point win (84-80).
Whether the Fever could overcome the Sun in the postseason is dependent on several factors, one of them being Mitchell's scoring.
