Kelsey Plum had a terrible shooting night in Game 1 of the first-round series between the Las Vegas Aces and Seattle Storm. It was Plum's worst postseason game ever but the Aces got the job done to take a 1-0 lead heading into Game 2 on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old guard finished with two points, two assists and a steal. She had two turnovers and shot 1-for-8 from the field in 26 minutes of action. She went 0-for-4 from beyond the arc, which was the only fourth time she did not make a 3-point shot in the playoffs.
Here are Plum's complete stats tonight:
Luckily for the Aces, the rest of the team picked up the slack led by A'ja Wilson with 21 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Tiffany Hayes had 20 points off the bench, Chelsea Gray contributed 16 points and 17 assists, and Jackie Young added 12 points and seven rebounds in their 78-67 win.
The Seattle Storm came out of the gate firing and their defense only allowed nine points to the Las Vegas Aces in the first quarter. It was a nervy start for the back-to-back defending WNBA champions, but they regained their composure in the second period.
It became a back-and-forth game in the third quarter before the Aces locked down the Storm in the fourth, allowing just two points. Las Vegas will look got close out the series on Tuesday at the Michelob ULTRA Arena.
As for Kelsey Plum, it was the worst performance of her playoff career. According to Basketball Reference, Plum's previous career low in the postseason was six points. She did it twice, with the first one being Game 3 of the 2021 WNBA semifinals against the Phoenix Mercury.
The second happened in Game 1 of the 2022 WNBA Finals versus the Connecticut Sun. But regardless of her bad shooting night, the Aces have enough depth to make up for it and still get the win.
Kelsey Plum and the Las Vegas Aces are looking for a 3-peat
The Las Vegas Aces are looking to become the first team since the Houston Comets to win three straight WNBA championships. The Aces dominated the league in the past two seasons led by the quartet of A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray.
However, it has been a rough season for the Aces despite Wilson's historic campaign. Gray missed most of the season recovering from a leg injury and the franchise faced a lot of controversy surrounding their former player Dearica Hamby, who filed a lawsuit against the Aces.
Despite all the struggles early in the season, the Aces finished the season with homecourt advantage. They also had plenty of momentum heading into the playoffs after winning eight of their last 10 games.
