The inaugural season of the Unrivaled Basketball League tipped off on Friday in Miami, Florida. Among those who caught the action was Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant, who took to social media to hail the advent of the new league.

'KD' wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that he saw potential in the concept behind the newly formed 3-on-3 league and that he was happy to see women professional players have another platform to showcase what they can do.

The two-time NBA champion said, as shared by Bleacher Report on Instagram:

"I love the concept of @Unrivaledwbb... it's great see our pros hoopin on TV during the winter months..."

Co-founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart (New York) and Napheesa Collier (Minnesota), Unrivaled got its three-month run going on Friday with a double-header at the Wayfair Arena in Miami. Mist BC played Lunar Owls BC in the opening game. This was followed by a game between Rose BC and Vinyl BC.

Lunar Owls chalked up its first victory, beating Mist 84-80. Collier paced the team with a double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with three assists and two steals. Skylar Diggins-Smith (Seattle Storm) added 21 points of her own in the win.

For Mist, it was Jewell Loyd (Storm) who top-scored with 30 points, followed by Rickea Jackson (LA Sparks) with 15.

In the second game, Vinyl came away with a 79-73 victory over Rose. Rhyne Howard (Atlanta Dream) had a game-high of 33 points, with Dearica Hamby adding 17.

Rose, meanwhile, was led by the 24 points of Kahleah Copper (Phoenix Mercury) and 21 of Chelsea Gray (Las Vegas Aces).

Games resume on Saturday with Phantom BC going up against Laces BC and Lunar Owls battling Rose BC.

Breanna Stewart happy to see vision for Unrivaled come to reality

Unrivaled co-founder Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty was happy and excited to see their dream league finally take off on Friday to warm reception from fans.

Unrivaled was designed to provide a viable alternative for women professional players to showcase their stuff and at the same time earn good money. It also presents a new way of holding women's basketball tournaments, with players deeply involved.

Joined by co-founder Napheesa Collier of Minnesota Lynx, Stewart spoke to TNT Sports ahead of tip-off about the inaugural season of Unrivaled. She said:

"Yeah, it's two, two and half years in the making. To start it tonight, I know there is a buzz here in the building but also people watching... knowing that it is just going to be huge for women's sports [is amazing]."
