After two straight losses against the Minnesota Lynx, A'ja Wilson's Las Vegas Aces returned to action against the Chicago Sky on Sunday. Angel Reese's Sky were coming off a two-game losing streak after dropping games against the Connecticut Sun and the Phoenix Mercury.
The Aces got off to a slow start and went 0-5 from the field in the first few minutes as Chicago looked to get its frontcourt going, particularly Kamilla Cardoso. On defense, the Aces looked out of sorts in their rotations and the timing of switches against the Chicago Sky to start the game.
The Aces also struggled from beyond the arc, primarily due to the presence of Reese and Cardoso.
Wilson's determination, however, earned her side some points as she converted two free throws.
After Tiffany Hayes converted on a long two-point jumper, the Aces proceeded to the second quarter down five.
However, the Sky's lead didn't last long, with Wilson's two-way play impacting the game. She powered Las Vegas to a 32-30 lead entering the second half.
The Chicago Sky received contributions from Chennedy Carter and Michaela Onyenwere, in addition to the presence of Reese and Cardoso at the post. Aside from their defense, the twin tower duo was relentless on the boards.
The Aces opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 start to race to a 59-52 lead with 8:13 minutes to go in the game. With around five minutes to go, Las Vegas started to pull away with Kelsey Plum and Megan Gustafson knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to 13.
However, the Chicago Sky didn’t wilt and were able to trim the lead to seven points. With just 37 seconds remaining, Carter knocked down a huge 3-pointer to bring her team to within three points. She converted on another deep shot to tie the game at 75 with 1.1 seconds remaining. Aces coach Becky Hammon set up an incredible final play to get a great shot for A’ja Wilson, winning the ball game.
