The Chicago Sky took a chance on Chennedy Carter, giving her a camp invite after the guard was waived by the LA Sparks in 2023. Los Angeles reportedly ended her stint with the team due to “poor conduct.” Carter sat out the season to take a break from basketball.
Chicago’s under-the-radar move in February this year paid off big-time. Carter earned a spot in the rotation before eventually becoming a starter following Marina Mabrey’s trade to the Connecticut Sun. She finished the season with a team-best and career-high 17.5 points with 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
Chennedy Carter’s performance seemingly made her a contender for the “Breakout Player of the Year" award, per the Committee Sports Group.
Carter reacted to the post on X, formerly Twitter:
“there’s literally no way lol, i sat out all year and improved all season.”
Carter’s stint with the Sky did not get off to a headline-grabbing start. Against the Dallas Wings in Chicago’s season-opening game, she finished with four points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. The feisty guard, however, began to get noticed in the next two weeks, reaching double-figure scores in eight straight games.
More importantly, Chennedy Carter quickly formed chemistry with Chicago Sky rookie and potential franchise cornerstone Angel Reese. The two were hard-nosed, physical and unapologetic, giving the Sky much-needed identity in their rebuild.
Carter’s contention for the “Breakout Player of the Year” award is built on her two-way impact. After sitting out last season, he put up arguably the best combination on both ends of the floor by a perimeter player.
Chennedy Carter had a shot at the Sixth Player of the Year award before the Marina Mabrey trade
Chennedy Carter was a top contender for the Sixth Player of the Year award until Marina Mabrey’s trade to the Connecticut Sun. Carter came off the bench for most of the season behind Mabrey and Diamond DeShields. When the former asked for a change of scenery and the latter struggled, Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon made Carter a fixture in the starting lineup.
Following the trade, Carter grabbed a stranglehold on one of the two guard spots. Lindsay Allen and Rachel Banham alternated as her partner while DeShields became part of the bench mob.
Chennedy Carter started in 20 of the 33 games she played this season. However, the new role likely took her out of the running for the Sixth Player of the Year award.
