Alyssa Thomas is representing Team USA for the first time in her basketball career. The Connecticut Sun star made her Olympic debut against Japan on Monday. Cheering Thomas ahead of the game was her Macedonian fiancée DeWanna Bonner.
DeWanna Bonner who plays at the forward position is also teammates with Thomas on the Sun team. The Macedonian player took to her social media to cheer her fiancée. Bonner posted a picture of herself in Thomas’ #14 Team USA jersey on her Instagram story.
Posting the update on her IG story, Bonner wrote:
“Gameday!!! Let’s go 14!!”
Bonner has also joined Thomas in France. In her previous post on Instagram, she posted a picture of basketball at an indoor stadium in Nanterre. She is a Macedonian and her home country couldn’t qualify for the Olympics.
Previously, the couple faced each other during the All-Star Game in Phoenix. Bonner represented the WNBA All-Star Team, while Thomas played for the USA Olympic team. The All-Star Team beat the national team 117-109.
Before the game, the couple sat down for an interview with SLAM. During the conversation, Alyssa Thomas told the magazine that she wasn’t going to let Bonner score even a point in the game. Bonner ended up scoring five points in 16 minutes. Thomas scored four points in 18 minutes.
DeWanna Bonner addresses domestic violence allegations by social media against Alyssa Thomas
DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas have been dating each other since 2020. The couple got engaged three years later in 2023 during the All-Star break. Thomas and Bonner share the locker room as well as a house which also includes Bonner’s two children.
Domestic violation allegations were made against Alyssa Thomas on social media after Thomas' hard foul on Angel Reese. Earlier in May, when the Sun were playing Chicago Sky, Thomas hit Reese on her back while fighting for a rebound. She was ejected after the flagrant foul.
Bonner immediately came in defense of her teammate and her fiancee:
"Yall.. I can take the heat all day because I’m totally locked in on our season. However implying that domestic violence is going on in what we have, not going to happen. AT ALL! Be mad, upset, angry at the play.. But we are not those people..it’s not cool! that’s WAY too far."
Later, she also posted a picture of herself with Thomas exiting the arena while they held each other. She captioned the post:
“She’s definitely not that person!!” followed by a heart emoji.
Bonner and Thomas are reportedly planning to get married this offseason.
