WNBA star Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever have had anything but the fairytale start to the season they hoped for. The group has been struggling to find their form in the regular season, dropping back to back games both on the road, and at home. During that time, Clark has struggled to find her rhythm and perform like she did at the collegiate level.
The way sports pundit Colin Cowherd sees things, the start of Clark's career has been reminiscent of other sporting icons who made the jump to US sports. In the case of Messi, after winning the World Cup, he left fans floored by joining the MLS and signing with Miami.
In the case of David Beckham, he too joined the MLS, but went on to play for the LA Galaxy, much like another legendary footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The way Cowherd sees things, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever need to figure things out soon given that their schedule will only get harder from here.
"She struggled last night. You've got to take advantage of these opportunities. You know, a great example, the MLS, and it's closer to the WNBA than it is the NFL. They made sure Beckham got to Los Angeles.
"They weren't going to put him middle of the country. They made sure he got to Los Angeles. ... Sometimes you gotta make stuff work."
Looking at Caitlin Clark's stats in first two WNBA games
Given that Caitlin Clark was the talk of the WNBA before making it to the league, it's no surprise that fans are continuing to discuss her struggles. Before the former Iowa Hawkeye was ever drafted, the league had already decided to nationally televise 36 of the Fever's 40 games.
At the same time, ticket prices for Fever games, and games where the Fever were in town around the country, saw a spike as fans clamored to see Clark play. Given the anticipation, many fans have been stunned to see Clark struggle early on in her career.
In her first game of the season on May 14, Clark logged 32 minutes for the Fever against the Connecticut Sun. Over the course of the game she scored 20 points on just 5-15 shooting from the field, while going 4-11 from downtown.
In addition, she notably didn't record a single rebound, and logged just three assists while racking up an astounding 10 turnovers. Two days later when the Fever played the New York Liberty, Clark again struggled to find her form, scoring just nine points on 2-8 shooting.
This included a 1-7 night from downtown, and while Caitlin Clark logged seven rebounds and six assists, the Fever ultimately came up short to the Liberty in their second regular season game.
While an adjustment period is to be expected given the difference in the styles of play from the collegiate level to the WNBA level, it's clear that Clark's adjustment period is happening under the spotlight.
